Everyone Poops is an experimental publication that explores public/private human behavior as well as questions of real and fake. We couple excerpts from The Stranger by Albert Camus with an assortment of still images that range from pop culture references to glitches in the Sims. We also implement elements of generative design in the grids and typography layouts on some pages.

tones[i] is an interactive vest lined with LED strips, which changes color palettes based on the user’s interaction with a touch sensor placed on the vest’s shoulder.


	Context and Significance
For our design, we took inspiration from the song Dance Monkey by Tones and I (hence the reference in our project title), as well as this instagram account that makes custom LED costumes. We imagined this vest to be something one wears when dancing with other people at a club. Ultimately we wished to have the interaction involve a touch sensor changing colors of both the vest and an LED screen. The project is intended to enhance the nightclub experience and celebrate connection through its interactive elements.
Concept and Design
Our project had many iterations before becoming a wearable vest, and throughout all of them we kept the LED strips and touch sensors as the main materials. We used LED strips because they are both appealing to the eye and flexible in application, as they can be sewed into fabric and woven through cardboard, compared to a static 8×8 matrix LED board or individual LED pins. The LED strips proved to be incredibly successful. With the help of the FastLED library, we were able to create custom color palettes that changed based on which touch sensor was triggered. We kept the touch sensor throughout the project as we wanted to explore connection through touch. However if time allowed, we could have definitely improved our sensor selection and used copper tape to create our own touch sensors, which would give us more flexibility in their placement on the wearable vest.Fabrication and Production
We started this project with the simple goal of creating an interactive LED board. Thus, at user testing, we showed a large cardboard wall that had laser cut holes for LED strips to go through, covered by a sheet of wax paper. We also had a touch sensor taped to a smaller piece of cardboard for users to interact with. When users touched each of four touch sensors, the color palettes of the LEDs would change, and a piezo buzzer tone would sound for each touch. Our main feedback from user testing was that: 1. we needed to diffuse the LEDs more as they were still too bright right beneath the wax paper, and 2. We needed to think more about the context of the project, as just a wall of LEDs was not interactive enough. From here, we were able to birth our idea (also thanks to Marcela) to create a wearable vest version of our circuit. Niki took the lead in fabricating the vest, and sewed the LED strips on and added the fabric on top to diffuse them. Meanwhile, I improved the code to add a fading color changing effect.

We also improved our LED board by creating a 1.5 inch border around the cardboard so that the wax paper was further away from the LEDs. This way, the LEDs were significantly more diffused and created more of an ambient lighting effect behind our wearable vest.

Conclusion

 Our goal for “tones[i]” was to create an interactive vest that improves the nightclub experience. I think we succeeded in the interactive aspect, as the touch sensor is where the user provides input, which is then processed as different color palettes (output). Furthermore, “tones[i]” started off about connection, but its presentation in class became more of a performance, in that Niki and I demonstrated how it would work, while the audience’s main role was as spectators on the side. Because we were in a classroom setting and I was wearing the vest in the project demo, perhaps people weren’t as comfortable coming up to touch my shoulder, but after we put the vest back on the figurine I noticed a lot of people go up to play with the vest on their own. I think the LEDs behind the intricate fabric diffusion are what drew the audience in, in addition to the touch sensor interactive aspect.
 

If we had more time, I would explore using copper tape to create our own grid of touch sensors, or experiment with a tilt sensor or motion sensor to make the LEDs react to different movements. Additionally, I would improve the user experience by adding a battery pack to the LEDs so that the vest could be portable and classmates could try it on. I would also consider improving the user experience by putting the touch sensors under a different color fabric. Lastly, I would switch to an Arduino Mega board so that the circuit could handle 300+ LEDs without running into memory issues. 

This was my first time working on an official project involving hardware. The entire process was incredibly thought-provoking and it was very fun to bring our ideas to life. From this project, I definitely learned how the design of various components influences the user experience and response to the project, which I hope to be more mindful of in future projects.

	HUMAN ○ CIRCUIT
	Pairing self-constructed capacitive sensors with Arduino and Processing, HUMAN ￮ CIRCUIT is an interactive installation that encourages people to experience art together through physical touch. Participants join hands with the sensors and become part of the piece while enjoying generative visuals on a screen.

	Prior research included inspirations such as Messe Di Voce by Golan Levin, and Manuela Donoso’s Walllight. These projects demonstrate different components of interaction: Levin’s piece invites continued exploration of a certain movement or sound by continuously generating visuals on the screen, while the emphasis of Walllight is to invite multiple participants to interact with the space. Conceptually, my goal for this project was to fuse these two components together, by generating visuals that respond when multiple people join hands with the sensors.

	[Written in September 2022, prior to nation wide protests.]
This set of posters was inspired by the voices of those caught in the absurdity and harshness of Beijing’s Zero-Covid policy. For context, mainland China has been implementing Zero-Covid since the beginning of the pandemic, which aims to control and suppress outbreaks through strategies such as contact tracing, mass testing, border quarantines, and lockdowns. In April 2022, Shanghai went under a city-wide lockdown, an
	
	
d people were confined to their homes with little time to prepare. The lockdowns were very chaotic as people navigated food shortages and had trouble accessing people medical care for non-covid related issues. The lockdown in S
	
	
hanghai lifted at the end of June this year, and people ultimately emerged with frustration, grief, and psychological distress.
In the months following, outbreaks and lockdowns similar to what happened in Shanghai have been popping up throughout the rest of China. September was a particularly notable month for many, as digital protests resurfaced on Chinese social media, triggered by a bus accident where a bus that was transporting residents in Guiyang (southwestern China) to a quarantine facility crashed in the middle of the night and killed 27 people.
Because of the way things work in China, in-person protests aren’t really a thing there. There are exceptions, such as this series of banners, which were put up one night during Shanghai’s lockdown and then gone the next morning.Usually, protests take place in digital spaces, where users repost critical posts as fast as they can before they get censored. A viral video called “The Voice of April”, which compiled heartbreaking audio clips from Shanghai’s lockdown, was shared millions of times, and even distorted and manipulated to avoid censorship, only to ultimately be erased from Chinese social media platforms completely.

Design Process

	My initial idea was inspired by the momentum
	
	
 of the bus crash that happened in September. I wanted to create 27 ‘generative portraits’ using simple shapes in p5.js, to remember the 27 people who died while on that bus.

I omitted the generative portrait idea, as the feedback I got from class was that the characters looked cute, and the tone I wanted for this series is more serious. I then decided to focus on generative text instead. The slogan I experimented with at first was “We’re on that bus, too,” a trending phrase expressing how people under zero-covid feel like they themselves can be taken away to a quarantine facility at any time. In my first attempt, I manipulated the position of the text with mouseX, mouseY and lowered the opacity to create the trailing effect.

Upon thinking further, I wanted to think more about how to convey the absurdity and tension around this topic. After further brainstorming I changed the background images and the way the text was generated on the screen.

To generate the text, I edited code from the Generative Design book, which makes the words rotate randomly depending on the punctuation of the sentence. The reasoning for this was both for aesthetic purposes and to create a more visibly generative look.

On the day of printing (10/11/2022), the Chinese Party newspaper People’s Daily released an article titled “Dynamic Zero is Sustainable and Must be Adhered To.” The article states that even though there are challenges with the policy, that China must stick to it. Any public official statement on China’s covid policy usually gets a lot of attention. However, due to the digital censorship, thousands of comments are not visible.&#38;nbsp;

Printing ProcessTo prepare the posters for print, I separated the layers of generative text from the background using the p5.riso cutout function.

I started with the red text, which I ran through the printer a couple of times to have a more saturated color.

I then proceeded to add the background images, which I also dithered using the p5.riso examples. Most of the pieces printed successfully, with a few where I had to adjust the opacity to prevent the printer from jamming. The final result is this:

For some of the prints, the registration came out saturated and crisp, and was pretty successful.
